SA RILab and MakerSpace teams attend RMB EXPO

The Department of Library Services, University of Pretoria MakerSpace and the Southern Resilience Innovation Lab (SA RILab) was invited by the Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) to attend, present and exhibit at the RMB organised “Skills for the Future Expo” hosted at their offices in Johannesburg on May 6th, 2016. The event was attended by over 100 people from different companies and organisations with an interest in innovation development and nurturing. The SA RILab and the MakerSpace were given a 45 minute presentation time and space to exhibit their activities. The SA RILab presentation by Mr Ozius Dewa focused on introducing the ResilientAfrica Network and in particular the innovation projects under SA RILab incubation. Isak van der Walt, Manager of the MakerSpace presented on the role of MakerSpace in support of student innovation at the University of Pretoria. Participants at the workshop were able to view some of the 3D printers used at the MakerSpace and some of the students’ projects.  On the exhibition table the SA RILab had two posters; one for the YSIG (Nubrix) and another for RIC4FIG (TIFF). After successive presentation from different organisations, visitors came to the exhibition tables and were mostly impressed by the Nubrix innovation which seeks to produce building bricks out of recycled paper. A number of visitors expressed their interest to make follow-up discussions with the Nubrix innovator to source more funding for the innovation. One more student innovator was given an opportunity to present their innovation (Magnon).

For RMB, the EXPO was a first step in a journey of development and to ensure continuous growth in partnerships. As a next step for them, they are in the process of finalising a skills for the future portal - an electronic platform for engagement and discussion around future skills needed and shop around for different skills on offer to best suit participant needs.

The SA RILab and MakerSpace will continue to engage with the RMB team around the provision of capacity building for design thinking (Scaled Innovation Series) to organisations and individuals who may need the skills. See photos below
